Hamilton; singing through American history

Note: This is a review of the soundtrack and not the actual musical, since well.. I don’t live in America so I can’t go and see it.

Listening to the Hamilton soundtrack is really a roller coaster and I will do my best to explain my emotions throughout. Let’s start at the beginning…

I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk about Hamilton and it got me curious, so I put it on while working. In the beginning I was really digging it, the songs have a great melody and are sung by talented singers. At some point I started to follow the story and really feel for the characters that I couldn’t even see! In the end I was actually crying over a goddamn musical soundtrack. Well done Hamilton.. Well done.. You made me love you.

Hamilton tells the story of Hamilton throughout his life and starts at the beginning of the American revolution and continues until his death. The story takes you though American history and makes these historical characters real. (I especially loved Hamilton’s wife).

I really recommend listening to the Hamilton soundtrack if you don’t have a chance to watch the musical like me. It takes you trough the story and in the end you will feel as if you have seen the musical. It really does live up to the hype!

ALBUM REVIEW: Evolution

EVØLUTION is the first album of the band Ghost town after Evan Pearce left the band in July 2015. And this album is a masterpiece!

1425x1425srI didn’t expect much from this album, I liked their previous two albums (The after party & Party in the graveyard), but didn’t love them. They were OK. A little too screamo for my taste, although they had great lyrics. But they changed style with EVØLUTION, the music is cleaner now and a little more mainstream while they kept true to their style at the same time. The albums style goes back to the emo/scene music back in 2007 with a my chemical romance’s “The black parade” kind of feeling.

01 Spark
This song is great as a first track on the album, it gives a clear image on what you’re about to listen to, electrocore at it’s finest with a lyrics that calls out for a angsty evolution. Isn’t that what all 2015 emo teens want?
Favorite line: “Now we live in world of constantly being frightened”

02 Evolution
Continuing with the theme of a angsty evolution, this song feel like a sequel to “Spark”. Once again it is electrocore, but with a little influence of the screamo genre.
Favorite line: “When the world starts to shake from a million voices screaming on repeat”

03 Mean kids
Out of all the songs from the album, this one has my least favorite lyrics. But it makes up with a beat you want to lose control on.
Favorite line: “I never said I lovable, I never said I was more than just a punk”

04 Out alive
This song is my favorite from the album and might make it on my favorite songs of all time list. It has a catchy beat and beautifully constructed lyrics. It is a little more mainstream than the other songs on the album, but still typically Ghost Town. Lyrically it is about surviving in a fucked up society.
Favorite line: “All my life I’ve been battling a menacing deafening sound in my head”

05 Human
This song continues on the theme of a angsty revolution by asking the question what it is to be human and if they are human themselves. It is catchy, but the it did bother me that they spell G-H-O-S-T in the chorus and personally, I hate it when people spell in songs.
Favorite line: “Are we even human? Why do we feel so out of place?”

06 Loner
If you are a introvert, you can most definitely relate to this song. It tells about a guy who would rather stay at home alone then going out and party. Doesn’t that sounds familiar, my fellow introverts?
Favorite line: “I’d rather stay home reading books”

07 Internet pirates
I am in love with the intro of this song, it is so intriguing and it makes you wanna listen to this song just to find out how it goes. My only problem with this song is that in the chorus they are hard to understand sometimes.
Favorite line: “I will make you see mayhem, madness, infinite sadness”

08 Interlude
What can you say about an interlude? It is a calming melody which gives you a little break from the electrocore and lets you breath and gives you a chance to prepare for the emotional song that follows.

09 Candles
A beautiful ballad that will make all the Ghosties (ghost town fans) swoon as it has absolute adorable lyrics. Guys, take notes when listening to this song, cause this is how you sweep a girl off her feet!
Favorite lyrics: “’Cause when I light a candle, I know I’ll find you again”

10 Down
This song starts out with a ballad feeling, but after a couple of sentences it is clear that it will be more on the core part of electrocore. The lyrics aren’t the happiest and sang with clear anger in the Kevin’s voice. This song has to most style resemblance to their previous albums in my opinion.
Favorite line: “I can only take so much before I crumble, before I cave in”

11 Let go
The final song on the album has a beautiful message and a relaxed vibe over it. I can say it is a better version of let it go, since that was my first thought when listening to it. But the song is more about letting go of your problems and breath. The song has a uplifting beat, which leaves you with a smile on your face and hope for the future.
Favorite line: “If you want to get the best of me, you’ve gotta let me live my dreams”
